Artwork Title| Waves of Urban Farm (2024)
Form| Field Recordings
Artist| GUI Ren, YANG Cheng
The recordings were made around Hong Kong’s first urban farm, located near the sea. The vision of this farm is to foster sustainability and cultivate caring communities by promoting physical and mental well-being, while providing an open space for leisure and relaxation.
Ren extracted ultrasonic frequencies from her soundscape recordings using a basicUcho microphone, transforming the inaudible into audible sounds perceptible to the human ear. The presented segment includes the sound of a bicycle bell and the previously unheard ultrasonic elements, depicting a harmonious coexistence between residents, their environment, and the edible plants within the community. It also offers a sonic vision of natural resource recycling and ecological resilience.
Cheng captured the subtle vibrations of the small decorative windmills using a geophone. These windmills serve both aesthetic and educational purposes: they enrich the visitor experience and demonstrate the principles of wind energy in alignment with sustainable living and environmental awareness.
This artwork was featured in Listening to the Earth: Sonifying Planetary Health Ecologies, a hybrid (virtual and physical) exhibition presented as part of Spark 2024, the British Council’s festival of ideas.
《Waves of Urban Farm》
