GUI Ren is an artist, researcher, curator and musician whose interdisciplinary practice explores the relationship between sound, space, identity and gender. Currently a PhD candidate at the School of Creative Media, City University of Hong Kong, she works across soundscape composition, participatory soundwalks, spatial installations, live performance, and feminist curatorial approaches.
Her central research-creation initiative, the Female Soundscape Project, is a long-term platform that investigates how everyday listening practices among Chinese female new immigrants in Hong Kong reflect their experiences of adaptation, memory, and urban life. Beyond documenting these experiences, the project actively engages participants in sound-based creative practices—including field recording, soundwalking, listening workshops, and experimental sound composition—guiding them into the field of sound art and fostering new modes of expression and reflection through sound.
One of its key outcomes is the exhibition Sonic Transitions: Auditory Stories of Female New Immigrants in Hong Kong (2025), which GUI Ren curated and also participated in as an exhibiting artist. Supported by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council, the exhibition featured 10 sound-based works by 12 female artists, including sound installations, field recordings, and spatial compositions that explored memory, movement, and belonging through auditory means. As curator, GUI Ren conceptualized the exhibition as both a collective listening environment and a feminist platform, foregrounding the lived sonic experiences of migrant women navigating Hong Kong’s urban spaces.
GUI Ren is also the lead vocalist of the Hong Kong-based band CheeseIce, blending alternative pop with experimental sound. She has participated in art projects such as Sounding Tomorrow 2023 (co-organised with Hong Kong Creation Orchestra), DAT/ACT Exhibition 2022 (Hong Kong) and Sound Envelope 2021 (Hong Kong/London). Her research employs sound as the primary medium to explore the dynamic links between sound and identity, emotion and space. She is active as a researcher and has been featured in the book “Sonic (under)Currents and Currencies” by East and Southeast Asian Popular Music Press 2022. She has been invited as a speaker at various international conferences, such as IAPMS 2020 (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia), IASPM XXI 2022 (Daegu, Korea), MuSA 2022 (London, UK), IsaScience 2023 (Vienna, Austria), etc.
該計劃的重要成果之一為2025年展覽《聲音穿梭:香港女性新移民的聽覺故事》(Sonic Transitions: Auditory Stories of Female New Immigrants in Hong Kong),由桂仁策展並參展。
